The volume of raw material transformation is massive, but only part of that material ends up in the final product. The remainder constitutes waste in solid form, or dissolved in water, that requires treatment. In some cases the waste may be reused. Because of the high level of organic content often present in this type of waste, it may frequently be treated and reused efficiently using completely biological methods.
